6. The Polynesian Cultural Center

Portray is a good term to describe the PCC. One gets a sense of what life is like in the Pacific realm, but can you ever truly know without being there? This is not to say the place isn't wonderful, but it does have a Disney-esque feel to it. I truly believe the Brigham Young students try to represent their cultures as best as possible, but it is difficult when you are doing so in 10 minute presentations 8 times a day.

I did enjoy seeing the huts and manner in which islanders lived on a daily basis. It gives you a feeling of the simplistic lifestyle. These days people want to be dazzled with elaborate multi-media events, so it was nice to see this wasn't the case at the PCC. (But I sure wish I could have seen the end of that cool I-Max...thanks guys!) It can be argued the PCC is a "tourist trap", but would people pay money to see it if it weren't? After all the money goes to a good cause...better to send someone to college than line the pockets of some corporate conglomerate (which would have eventually happened if the Mormons had not opened the PCC first). We tend to forget that the average person does not want to see the world for what it truly is, but what they want it to be. Why not give them what they want, and in the meantime throw in a dose of reality when they do not realize it?
